Tensions To Rise

Over the past few months, Turkey has had its worst falling out with Israel since the beginning of their alliance, emerged as an unapologetic defender of Iran (a position that has placed it squarely at odds with the EU), laid the groundwork for closer cooperation with Russia in the battle for control of Caspian gas reserves, and concluded an agreement to establish a free-trade zone with Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. The apparent shifting of the Turkish government’s foreign policy focus from the west to the east and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s obvious efforts to establish Turkey as a power broker in the Middle East has fueled much discussion, at home and abroad, about the implications of the new diplomatic strategy for both political and economic stability in Turkey.
