Tunisia: Islamists Surge

On October 23, Tunisia held its first-ever freely contested multiparty election, with voters choosing representatives to a 217-member Constituent Assembly that will be responsible for drafting a new constitution. The vote was the first to be held in the wake of the so-called Arab Spring that triggered popular uprising across North Africa and the Middle East.
