Temer Survives, for Now
In early August, the lower house of the Brazilian legislature held a vote on whether to permit President Michel Temer to be tried before the Supreme Court on corruption charges.  The motion, which required a two-thirds majority for approval, was easily defeated, preventing the likely removal of the nation’s president for a second time in less than 18 months.  However, the issue divided the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), whose support is essential to the Temer administration’s chances of implementing the structural reforms required to generate a sustainable economic recovery and create a solid foundation for long-term fiscal stability.  Prosecutors have indicated that they are prepared to file additional charges against Temer, which will create pressure…
